It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Barbara Johnson, 87, of Youngstown, NY. Barbara was a remarkable individual whose zest for life was evident in everything she did. An incredible athlete, talented musician, and vivacious storyteller, she embodied boundless energy and lived life to the fullest.

Barbara passed away peacefully under the compassionate care of Niagara Hospice after a long battle with chronic lymphoma and dementia. Originally from California, she moved to Buffalo in 1967 to attend graduate school at the University at Buffalo, where she met her husband, Thomas M. Johnson Jr., who predeceased her after 55 years of marriage.

Barbara is survived by her daughter, Jennifer Smith (David), of Youngstown, and her cherished grandchildren, Natalie and Eric. She dedicated over 30 years to teaching in the Buffalo City School District and served as a former tennis coach at both the University at Buffalo and Buffalo State College. A passionate advocate for tennis and golf, she was an active member of several local country clubs and tennis facilities, participating on numerous USTA teams.

In addition to her athletic pursuits, Barbara was a strong supporter of her husband’s political career in Cheektowaga and the Cheektowaga Democratic Committee for many years. She also served on the Board of Directors for the Cheektowaga Symphony Orchestra and enjoyed playing piano, violin and viola.

Barbara will be missed by her brother-in-law, Richard Johnson (Lee), her niece Heather, nephew Michael, and extended family residing in California and Washington State. Her legacy of boundless energy, adventurous spirit and passion for sports and music will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Burial will be in Oakland Rural Cemetery in Youngstown, NY.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Barbara’s name to Niagara Hospice and the Cheektowaga Symphony Orchestra.
