Joel Mervin Hurtgam

September 18, 1958 — July 19, 2025

Youngstown, New York

Joel Mervin Hurtgam, of Youngstown, NY, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, July 19, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family and under the compassionate care of Niagara Hospice. Born in Niagara Falls, NY, Joel was the son of the late Mervin Ward and Sue Carol (née Harbison) Hurtgam.

A proud graduate of Wilson High School’s Class of 1976, Joel went on to serve his country honorably in the U.S. Army from 1976 to 1980. His strong work ethic and hands-on spirit led him to a fulfilling career as a self-employed mechanic—his skills well-known and appreciated throughout the community.

Joel lived life with a deep sense of adventure and camaraderie. A devoted NASCAR enthusiast, he visited 24 tracks across the United States, turning his passion for racing into cherished memories. He found joy in camping, fishing, and spending time with close friends, but nothing lit up his world like the presence of his beloved family. His grandchildren were his pride and joy, and he treasured every moment spent with them. Joel's life was a blend of grit, generosity, and joy. His legacy lives on in every hug shared, every story retold, and every engine that still hums thanks to his skillful hands.

Joel is predeceased by his brother Terry Hurtgam and his parents. He leaves behind his loving children: Dustin J. Hurtgam, Chantalle M. Hurtgam, and Jolynne M. (Frederick) Stevens; his cherished grandchildren: Dominic, Savanna, Onaley, and Grayson; caring siblings: Brenda (Jim) Bolinski, Craig Hurtgam, Rise (Jack) Gian, Mark Hurtgam, and Maryanne (Glenn) Boyce; dear sister-in-law, Julie Hurtgam; and many nieces and nephews whose lives he touched with kindness and warmth.

Committal services will be held on Thursday, July 24, 2025, at 3 PM at North Ridge Cemetery in the Town of Cambria. There will be no prior visitation. Arrangements have been entrusted to HARDISON FUNERAL HOMES, INC., 3648 Ransomville Road, Ransomville.
