Joseph Robert O'Brien

Joseph Robert O’Brien, 81, of Youngstown, NY, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, at his home, surrounded by his loving family and under the compassionate care of Niagara Hospice. Born in Manhattan, NY, he was the son of the late Joseph R. and Katherine E. (Reilly) O’Brien.

Joseph was a graduate of Cardinal Farley Military Academy. Following graduation, he proudly enlisted in the United States Army. After his service, he earned his degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Texas at El Paso.

In the early 1970s, Joseph moved to Western New York, where he later met the former Pamela J. Yost They were married on July 28, 1978, in Buffalo, NY, and went on to share 48 devoted years together.

A gifted engineer and visionary thinker, Joseph was a forerunner in Autonation, working with Kodak and contributing to military engineering applications still in use today. His professional accomplishments were matched only by his passion for the water, he was an avid, lifelong sailboat racer who found joy, challenge, and freedom on the open wind.

Besides his parents, Joseph was predeceased by his son, Joseph Robert O’Brien III, and his brother, John O’Brien.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Pamela; his loving children, Karen (Fred) Ortley and Alex O’Brien; and his cherished grandchildren, Liam, Madeleine Ortley, Jack Pearson O’Brien, and Vaida Hettinger. He is also survived by his caring brothers, Christopher (Vickie) O’Brien and Patrick O’Brien, along with many nieces and nephews who will remember him with affection.

The family will be present to receive friends on Friday, April 10, 2026, from 10 AM – 12 PM at HARDISON FUNERAL HOMES, INC., 410 Ridge Street, Lewiston. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Woodside, NY.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Joseph’s honor to Niagara Hospice, 4675 Sunset Drive, Lockport, NY 14094.
