Lawrence Ross Blackman, of Wilson, NY, passed away at home on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, at the age of 78.
Born in Buffalo, New York, Larry was the son of the late Raymond C. and Lucile B. (née Browning) Blackman. He graduated from East Aurora High School in 1966 and spent his junior year as an exchange student in Solingen, Germany—a formative experience that sparked a lifelong love of travel and deep connection to German culture. He went on to earn his Bachelor's degree from Hartwick College in Oneonta, NY.
Larry built a respected career as a Food Broker with Blackman and Ebsary, where his professionalism and warmth earned him lasting relationships. On November 28, 1968, he married his High School Sweetheart, Susan Moore in East Aurora, beginning a devoted partnership that spanned 57 years.
A man of many passions, Larry found joy on the water as a sailor and former member of the Wilson Tuscarora Yacht Club. He enjoyed golf, cherished history, and generously shared his knowledge as a volunteer tour guide at Old Fort Niagara. He was also a proud member of the Buffalo Dortmund Sister City Committee, reflecting his enduring ties to Germany and commitment to cultural exchange. He was a member of the Grocery Manufacturers Representatives and the New York State Restaurant Association.
Larry had a gift for fixing things, he would find a way to make something work again. He could often be found wood working in his basement, making “Seedy Stools,” a small stool for children to reach the sink, carrying on a tradition started by his late grandfather-in-law. His life was rich with family, friendship, and curiosity, and he approached each day with a spirit of resourcefulness and care.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Susan M. Blackman; loving children, Christopher (Karen Anne) Blackman and Frauke (Joe) Stoffel; exchange daughters, Katja (Thomas) Franzen and Julia (Ed) Gross; cherished grandchildren, Andrew J. (Samantha), Lucas E. Stoffel, Ross C. and Lars R. Blackman; and exchange grandchildren, Annika and Laura Franzen. He is also survived by his siblings Gregory A. Blackman, Carol (Rudolf) David-Blackman, Bruce E. Blackman, Judith (Ronald) Scoble, and Diane (Timothy) Clark; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister-in-law, Sarah Blackman.
